In the rugged terrains of Yorkshire, young Joe Carraclough (Jonathan Mason) battles the harsh realities of life as a miner's son. Amid his daily struggles, which include confrontations with a cruel school teacher, his only solace is found in the boundless love of his loyal collie, Lassie. However, the challenges of life take a harsher turn when the local mine is shut down, pushing Joe's father, Sam (John Lynch), to make a heartbreaking decision - he's forced to sell Lassie to The Duke (Peter O'Toole), the influential owner of the sprawling local estate.
The Duke's cruel servant, Hynes (Steve Pemberton), instills fear in Lassie, prompting the faithful dog to repeatedly escape and return to the Carracloughs. Despite their relentless efforts to return her, Lassie's homeward journey becomes an impossibility when the Duke relocates to the distant Scottish Highlands for the holiday season.
Yet, the indomitable spirit of the devoted collie refuses to be quashed. Lassie daringly escapes from the Duke's clutches, setting out on an arduous journey back to her true family, traversing hundreds of miles of testing terrains. In her path lie intimidating Glasgow dogcatchers and unexpected encounters, including a kindly circus performer who provides a brief respite.
As winter engulfs the landscape and Christmas approaches, it seems that only a miracle can reunite Lassie with her beloved family. Brimming with suspense and emotion, Lassie's epic journey home captures the unwavering bond between a boy and his dog, and the lengths they would go to keep it intact.
