Plot

During the rule of Emperor Suzaku (930-946 A.D.), an eerie white rainbow arcs over Kyoto, inciting a wave of anxiety. To soothe the public's unrest, the emperor commands Yasunori, a prominent astronomer, to interpret a cryptic Chinese manuscript. Yasunori, flanked by his two apprentices, Yasuna, the virtuous, and Doman, the power-hungry, favors Yasuna as his successor, much to Doman's chagrin. In the shadows of deceit, Doman, with the aid of Yasunori's wife, orchestrates Yasunori's murder and steals the secret manuscript. Framing Yasuna and his beloved Sakaki, Yasunori's adopted daughter, for these heinous acts, Doman ignites a chain of tragic events, leading to Sakaki's suicide and Yasuna killing Yasunori's wife in a fit of rage. Yasuna recovers the manuscript, embarking on an aimless journey that intertwines his fate with Kuzunoha, Sakaki's younger sister, with whom he falls deeply in love. Meanwhile, the royal court is steeped in turmoil as Lord Iwakura, Yasunori's brother-in-law, announces the Crown Prince's childlessness. Akuemon, Doman's henchman, is tasked with capturing a mystical white fox to break the prince's curse. The paths of Akuemon, Yasuna, and the elusive fox cross in an unexpected encounter. Akuemon captures Kuzunoha, leaving Yasuna battered. But salvation comes in the form of the white fox who rescues Yasuna and offers him solace by having her daughter impersonate Kuzunoha. Amidst this web of illusion and reality, a child is born. When the real Kuzunoha escapes Akuemon's clutches and reunites with Yasuna, the fox-form Kuzunoha vanishes, leaving behind only a poignant poem beside the sleeping infant. In this poignant narrative of love, betrayal, and supernatural intervention, "The Mad Fox" paints a vivid tapestry of human and mystical realms colliding.
