Plot

In the golden hues of autumn 1923, Fisher Willow, a wealthy, sharp-tongued Memphis debutante, is reluctantly drawn back to her rustic Tennessee plantation home. Having tasted the intellectual freedom of the Sorbonne, Fisher finds herself at odds with the narrow-minded societal norms of her home country. Her eccentric behavior and scandalous family history only amplify her status as an outsider, a reputation further tarnished by her father's reckless act causing property damage and the death of two men. Despite her age, Fisher is compelled by her Aunt Cornelia to make her debut in Memphis society and attend the season's debutante balls. With no suitors of her own, she enlists the services of Jimmy Dobyne, a poor but dignified young man, who shoulders the burdens of his alcoholic father and his mother, confined to a psychiatric facility. Though Jimmy runs the plantation commissary, his lineage traces back to a former state governor, making him a plausible escort for Fisher. Their relationship is anything but smooth from the outset, with Jimmy suspecting Fisher's intentions extend beyond merely requiring an escort to these high-society events. As the social season progresses, their intricate dance of companionship becomes entangled in a web of love, deceit, and societal expectations. One fateful night at a Halloween party, hosted by Fisher's only genuine friend, Julie Fenstermaker, their relationship is tested. The events of this evening, including an encounter with Jimmy's ex-girlfriend Vinnie McCorkle, a curious parlor game, a meeting with Julie's empathetic Aunt Addie, and the loss of a diamond teardrop earring worth $5,000, borrowed from Aunt Cordelia, threaten to unravel the delicate threads holding their relationship together. "The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond" is a riveting exploration of love, societal pressures, and personal identity in the backdrop of 1920s America. It intertwines the lives of two unlikely companions, navigating the tumultuous waters of high society, personal demons, and the relentless pursuit of acceptance.
