The Infidel (2010)

In the heart of suburban London, the charming Mahmud Nasir leads a peaceful life with his delightful wife, Saamiya, and their two children, Rashid and Nabi. The family's tranquility hinges on an impending marriage between Rashid and Uzma, the step-daughter of Arshad Al-Masri, an Egyptian-born, Pakistani cleric known for his extremist views. Despite not being a model Muslim himself, Mahmud agrees to court Arshad's favor, knowing that without it, the marriage will fall through. However, his world is thrown into disarray when he discovers, while perusing his late mother's documents, that he was adopted. His birth parents were Jewish, and his real name is Solly Shimshillewitz. Determined to keep this revelation a secret from his family, he seeks the assistance of his neighbor, Leonard Goldberg, to navigate the unfamiliar world of Judaism. As he fumbles through this journey of self-discovery, he even connects with his dying birth father in a nursing home. Unbeknownst to Mahmud, Arshad has been conducting his own investigation into his would-be son-in-law's past. Armed with evidence of Mahmud's seemingly anti-Semitic act at a protest, Arshad surprisingly endorses him, having mistaken Mahmud's actions as radical devotion. On the critical day of their meeting, Mahmud's life spirals out of control when police arrive to arrest him, forcing him to publicly declare his Jewish roots. This confession pulls the rug out from under Mahmud, isolating him from his family and leaving him stranded between the Jewish and Muslim communities he inadvertently straddles. His life, once marked by a simple suburban existence, is now upended by the complexities of faith, identity, and acceptance.
