In the grime and smoke of a steel mill town, Helen Chernin (Ida Lupino), a woman of iron will and fierce ambition, plots a path out of obscurity for herself and her gifted younger sister Katherine (Joan Leslie). She orchestrates a strategic marriage between Katherine and the weary vaudevillian Albert Runkel (Jack Carson), hoping to hitch a ride on the coattails of her sister's talent.
