Years ago, Sam Bowden was the defense attorney for a man named Max Cady, who committed a brutal rape. Bowden withheld information to ensure that Cady was convicted, and when Cady gets out of prison, he comes looking for revenge. This puts everyone around Bowden in danger, including the young clerk who has a crush on him, Bowden's wife and his 15-year-old daughter.
