Plot

In the twilight of the 1930s, beneath the looming shadow of Mussolini's reign, the prestigious Finzi-Contini family resides in Ferrara, Italy. As one of the leading aristocratic families, they are wealthy, refined, and distinctly Jewish. Their magnificent villa, surrounded by enchanting gardens, serves as a sanctuary from the encroaching world, where their adult children, Micol and Alberto, host a continuous whirl of tennis games and sophisticated parties. Amidst this circle of aristocratic leisure, enters Giorgio, a middle-class Jew who finds himself ensnared by the captivating Micol. His affection for her seems to teeter on the edge of her playful whims, as she knowingly ignites his desires only to quench them in the presence of his friends. As Giorgio grapples with his unrequited love, struggling to breach Micol's garden paradise, the ominous tremors of political unrest gradually infiltrate their secluded world. "The Garden of the Finzi-Continis" is a poignant narrative of love and loss, a tale woven against the backdrop of a society teetering on the brink of oppressive political change. It captures the stark contrast between the idyllic world of the Finzi-Continis and the harsh realities slowly closing in, all the while exploring the complexities of love and the inevitable encroachment of a world beyond the garden walls.
