Scarlett O'Hara is a Southern socialite living on a plantation, Tara, on the eve of the Civil War. Talk of war is everywhere, but Scarlett finds it boring. She's more interested in Ashley, a neighbor, but she's furious when she learns he wants to marry her cousin Melanie, a humiliation that is witnessed by the dashing but infuriating Rhett Butler. As the war begins, Scarlett faces tragedy, heartbreak and hardship, but she is determined to persevere no matter what.
