A Trip to the Moon (1902)

One of cinema's earliest films provides a whimsical vision of what space travel might look like. Professor Barbenfouillis is the president of the Institute of Incoherent Astronomy, and he's set his sights on an ostentatious objective — traveling to the moon. With an intrepid group of explorers, they concoct a unique rocket that takes on the appearance of a giant gun that fires a bullet. It's enough to get them safely to the new moon, but they find that they aren't alone. They'll need more than just quick wits if they hope to elude the dangerous and exotic people of the moon.
