Navigating the tumultuous waters of American politics, Gary Hart, a charismatic senator from Colorado, emerges as the favored contender for the Democratic presidential nomination. After a previous defeat in 1984 to Vice-President Walter Mondale, Hart decides to throw his hat back into the ring, aiming for the presidency with renewed determination. In the heat of the campaign, Hart audaciously dares the press and the public to scrutinize his personal life during his off-duty weekends. This bold challenge, against the advice of his campaign manager Bill Dixon, sets the stage for an unforeseen downfall. In 1987, a scandal erupts as Miami Herald reporters expose photos of Hart entwined in a compromising situation with journalist Donna Rice. As his political career crumbles, Hart's wife Oletha remains faithfully by his side, offering a poignant note of loyalty amidst the scandal. Donna Rice, at the heart of the controversy, vehemently rejects the insinuations of an affair with the now disgraced former senator, further complicating the narrative.
