Plot

In the heart of Argentina, the charismatic patriarch Julio Madariaga (Lee J. Cobb) reigns over his family and his farm, a pastoral haven he fondly regards as his Earthly paradise. His lineage intertwines multiple cultures as his daughters marry into diverse backgrounds - one to the French immigrant Marcelo Desnoyers (Charles Boyer) who fathers the carefree Julio (Glenn Ford) and the intellectually radiant Chi Chi (Yvette Mimieux), and the other to the stern German Karl von Hartrott (Paul Lukas), bringing forth three sons: Heinrich (Karlheinz Böhm), Gustav (Brian Avery), and Franz (Richard Franchot). The tranquillity of the Madariaga family shatters in 1938 when Heinrich, now a member of the ominous S.S., returns home, leading to Julio Madariaga's heartbreak and eventual death. As the shadow of war engulfs Europe, the family finds themselves in occupied Paris, with Franz emerging as a Nazi administrator, deepening the chasm within the family. Meanwhile, Julio, the erstwhile playboy, immerses himself in art and a clandestine affair with Marguerite Laurier (Ingrid Thulin), the spouse of newspaper owner Etienne Laurier (Paul Henreid), who is battling on Belgian frontlines. His sister, Chi Chi, is drawn into the French resistance, leading to her arrest and subsequent death at the hands of the Gestapo, a tragedy that shakes Julio out of his neutrality. Haunted by the loss of his sister and inspired by Marguerite's husband's bravery, Julio leverages his reputation as a frivolous socialite and his ties with the Germans to infiltrate their ranks, gathering crucial intelligence. As the war intensifies, Julio, alongside a fellow resistance fighter posing as his chauffeur, embarks on a perilous mission — a deadly gambit that will test their courage and determine their fate in the ruthless theatre of war. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse presents a stirring tale of family, loyalty, and the indomitable human spirit in the face of devastating conflict.
