In the quiet town of Evans City, Pennsylvania, tranquility is shattered when an airplane plummets from the sky, spilling its lethal cargo into the town's water supply. Unknowingly, the townsfolk are exposed to 'Trixie', a diabolical bacteriological weapon with a terrifying side-effect – it affects only humans, driving them to the brink of insanity, prompting acts of violence and chaos that shreds the fabric of their once peaceful community.
The ominous shadow of the U.S. Army descends upon the town, led by the stern Colonel Peckem, intending to contain the spreading madness. With no known antidote, the infected are destined for either death or an incurable madness, while the healthy ones are imprisoned within the town’s borders. The military's arrival only escalates the pandemonium, transforming the idyllic setting into a veritable hell on earth.
Caught in the middle of this spiraling nightmare are the pregnant nurse Judy, her devoted husband David, their friend Clank, and a father-daughter duo, Artie and Kathy. They band together in a desperate bid to breach the town's borders, but their attempted escape is marred by the relentless pursuit of the army, making their quest for survival a perilous tightrope walk.
Meanwhile, within the confines of his laboratory, the enigmatic Dr. Ralston Watts races against time, meticulously analyzing blood samples in a frantic attempt to unlock a cure for the rampaging disease. As the town teeters on the edge of annihilation, the question remains: will Evans City succumb to the madness, or can it be saved from the grip of 'The Crazies'?
