Plot

In the serene landscape of England's countryside, a train journey fates together the lives of the timid and sheltered Lina McLaidlaw and the audacious, handsome gambler, Johnnie Aysgarth. Their encounter is unexpected, as the cavalier Johnnie invades Lina's first class solitude with a third class ticket. Their paths cross again when Johnnie eavesdrops on a conversation about Lina's inheritance and, swiftly and charmingly, woos her into a whirlwind romance that results in matrimony. Their wedded bliss, however, is short-lived. Returning from a lavish honeymoon, Lina unravels the threads of deceit that make up her husband's character. Johnnie, she discovers, is a compulsive gambler, living off borrowed money to maintain an ostentatious lifestyle. His lies stretch deeper when Beaky, his old friend and business partner in a precarious real estate venture, visits their home. Lina's suspicions grow into a chilling fear as she contemplates the unthinkable - that Johnnie may be plotting Beaky's demise. Their lives take a darker turn when Johnnie and Beaky decide to dissolve their partnership in Paris. The mysterious death of Beaky in the City of Lights brings two detectives knocking on their door, and Lina's fear reaches its zenith. She now believes that not only is her husband a murderer, but she could very well be his next victim. As the tension escalates, the once-bucolic countryside becomes a shadowy landscape of suspense and uncertainty, where Lina must decide who to trust, and how to survive.
