Plot

Steelyard Blues (1973) is a vibrant tale that follows the high-octane life of Jesse Veldini, a man perpetually caught in a cyclone of incarceration and demolition derbies. Recently released from his third stint in prison, Veldini is driven by two ambitions: staying clear of the prison bars and reaching a significant milestone in his adrenaline-fueled demolition derby career. These seemingly incompatible goals are further complicated by his brother, Frank Veldin, a police detective with a polished surname and political dreams. Frank is doggedly determined to steer Veldini towards a straight-arrow life—a path essential to his own ambitions of running for District Attorney. Once freed, Veldini finds himself back in the familiar confines of the scrap yard, amidst his motley crew of non-conformists. There's Eagle, a former circus human-fly who embraces his eccentricities, and Veldini's impressionable younger brother, The Kid, a guitar player who idolizes him. Hovering on the fringe of this circle is Iris Caine, a courtesan with connections that reach into the city's power corridors. Eagle, aware of Veldini's struggle to adapt to the straight life, proposes a daring plan to another crew member, Duval Jax, who resides in a rented airplane. The audacious scheme involves making the plane operational and flying away to a place where they can redefine freedom on their own terms. Yet, to make this dream a reality, they'd need to purchase the plane and the parts they can't salvage from the scrap yard. This would inevitably pull them back into a life of larceny, placing them squarely in Frank's crosshairs, who wouldn't hesitate to send Veldini back to prison in pursuit of his political ambitions. As Veldini is torn between his thirst for freedom and his brother's lofty expectations, Steelyard Blues unfolds into a thrilling narrative of ambition, brotherhood, and the struggle for personal freedom.
