Simpatico (1999)

In the sun-drenched streets of Azusa, childhood friends Vinnie, Carter, and Rosie mastermind a daring horse racing swindle, cleverly replacing thoroughbreds with underdogs to rake in a fortune on improbable odds. When their scheme is threatened by a suspicious official, they cunningly ensnare him in a web of blackmail. Two decades later, the tables have turned. Carter and Rosie, now a power couple in Kentucky's elite racing circles, are on the brink of selling their prize stallion, Simpatico. Meanwhile, Vinnie, a washed-up alcoholic, languishes in Pomona's shadows. When Vinnie hatches a plot to win Rosie back, a turbulent game of cat and mouse ensues. He seduces Carter back to California, pilfers his wallet, and absconds with the old blackmail evidence, heading back towards Kentucky. Desperate, Carter implores Cecilia, a humble grocery clerk and Vinnie's confidante, to chase after Vinnie and retrieve the incriminating material tucked away in a mysterious box. As the story gallops towards a gripping climax, the question remains - will Cecilia manage to outmaneuver Vinnie and rescue Carter's secrets from the past?
