Plot

Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam war era, the film "Running on Empty" offers a compelling narrative of the Pope family – Annie, Arthur, and their two sons, Danny and Harry. Once student radicals, Annie and Arthur have been fugitives since 1971, following their incendiary attack on a napalm research facility, a misguided act of rebellion that unintentionally injured a janitor. This life-altering incident forced them into a clandestine existence, perpetually on the move under assumed identities. Their transient lifestyle is facilitated by a covert network of allies, known as the Liberation, who aid them in evading federal pursuit. Their only familial connection is Sophie Popov, Arthur's mother, whose passing marks an emotional turning point in their journey. Annie and Arthur are estranged from Annie's affluent parents, whom they perceive as part of the societal establishment they once vehemently opposed. Despite their nomadic existence, the Pope family manages to hold onto a few cherished possessions, amongst which is Annie's childhood practice board, a symbol of perseverance and a tool she used to impart her love for music to her elder son, Danny. The narrative takes a poignant turn as Danny, having matured in this unusual environment, yearns for a life beyond the shadows. Nearing the end of his senior year in Waterford, New Jersey, Danny's life begins to unfurl in unexpected directions. He experiences the sweet pangs of first love with his classmate, Lorna Phillips, and dreams of pursuing music at Julliard, encouraged by Lorna's father and his music teacher, Mr. Edward Phillips. This crossroads in Danny's life presents a difficult choice for the family. Should they let their son chase his dreams, risking their capture or losing him forever? Or should they continue running on empty, bound by their past and the fear of an uncertain future? "Running on Empty" is a poignant exploration of family ties, personal dreams, and the sacrifices made in the name of both. The film beautifully encapsulates the struggle of holding onto one's identity while constantly being on the run, and the heartrending decisions that come with it.
