Plot

Immerse yourself in the extraordinary life journey of Mick Travis (Malcolm McDowell), an emblematic figure of middle-class Britain, striving to carve his niche in his youthful existence. Cleverly adapting to the expectations of those in power, Mick's journey accelerates at an unprecedented pace, propelling him to heights often reserved for those with years of experience. As a result, he rapidly ascends within the ranks of Imperial Coffee, acquiring his own sales territory that encompasses the northeast and eventually, Scotland. Alongside prestigious professional accomplishments, Mick's position ushers in a cascade of unexpected perks, including the adoration of women who readily submit to his newfound charm. However, his rapid ascent isn't without trials. Mick is drawn into a tumultuous maelstrom of class and authority conflicts, the pinnacle of which is his encounter with the affluent Burgess family. He becomes entangled with the industrial magnate Sir James Burgess (Sir Ralph Richardson) and his daughter Patricia (Dame Helen Mirren), whom Mick yearns to wed. As Mick navigates the murky waters of high society and their shady dealings, he discovers the class struggle is a two-faced demon, bearing its teeth not only upwards but also downwards towards the working class and the destitute. Adding a unique touch to this fascinating narrative, Alan Price, accompanied by his small combo, serve as a modern-day Greek chorus, their songs echoing the trials and tribulations of Mick's journey. This vivid portrayal of the human struggle for success weaves an unforgettable tale, capturing the essence of a man's quest for his place in the world.
