In the heart of a rural Indian village, the mighty Zamindar (Amrish Puri) wields power with an iron fist, his reach extending even to the law itself. His youngest brother, Vishwam (Naseeruddin Shah), is a stark contrast to his family's decadence, distinguished by his virtuous restraint from vice. His eyes, however, are bewitched upon laying sight on Susheela (Shabana Azmi), the wife of the village's newly appointed schoolmaster (Girish Karnad), despite being married to the gentle Rukmani (Smita Patil).
The schoolmaster's arrival ushers in a storm of conflict that soon engulfs the entire village. One fateful night, Susheela is abruptly snatched away by the Zamindar's men (Mohan Agashe and Anant Nag), her desperate cries echoing in the helpless silence of the bystanders. The schoolmaster's pleas fall on deaf ears, his efforts to rescue his wife futile against the Zamindar's domineering influence.
Even the village's own law enforcer (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) kneels before the Zamindar's authority, rendering the schoolmaster's situation seemingly hopeless. How far will he go, how much will he risk, to reclaim his stolen love? 'Nishant' immerses viewers in a tale of power, desire, and the relentless pursuit of justice, set against the backdrop of a village under a tyrant's rule.
