Plot

In the urban jungle of Los Angeles, Roger Greenberg, a 41-year-old New York-based carpenter, is trying to stitch back the pieces of his life after a nervous breakdown. The hospital's recent release, Roger's hyper-sensitive and hyper-critical nature, makes him a stickler for detail, often spending his energy writing to corporations about their insufficiencies. Yet, beneath the bristles of his critical exterior, Roger sees himself as a beacon of unfiltered truthfulness. Once a promising musician, Roger's life took an unexpected detour when he rejected a record deal, a decision that left his bandmates' dreams in tatters. Eric Beller, one of the two LA-residing former bandmates, has achieved financial prosperity but still harbors resentment towards Roger. The other, Ivan Schrank, despite not being as successful, has forgiven Roger and remains a loyal friend. Roger's life hits a temporary pause as he agrees to house sit for his brother Phillip's family in LA whilst they vacation in Vietnam. This also includes the responsibility of a German Shepard, Mahler, who needs a new doghouse—a task Roger willingly undertakes. Phillip's personal assistant, Florence Marr, a recent college graduate of 25, is tasked with being Roger's support system. Florence, despite her intelligence, is plagued by insecurity and aimlessness. The pair's casual interactions evolve into a complex sexual relationship initiated by Roger. Florence is drawn to the hidden layers of wit and intellect beneath Roger's scarred emotional exterior, even as their relationship navigates through tumultuous highs and lows, their connection tethered by their shared responsibility for Mahler. As Roger reunites with Eric, Ivan, a past lover named Beth, and his college-age niece Sara, he is forced to confront his past decisions and their implications. Meanwhile, Florence grapples with whether Roger is just another burden or something more. In this emotional kaleidoscope, Roger must traverse his past and present, and in doing so, he often becomes his worst enemy. The story of Roger Greenberg is a poignant exploration of human fragility, self-sabotage, and the possibility of rediscovery in the most unexpected relationships.
