Plot

In the quaint town of Porpoise Spit, Australia, Muriel Heslop, a socially awkward and directionless 22-year-old, finds solace in the harmonious tunes of ABBA, dreaming of a day she'll walk down the aisle in a white dress. Her days are spent in the confines of her room, her dreams unmarred by the reality that she's never been on a single date. The constant barrage of verbal abuse from her politically ambitious father, who blames his family for his professional setbacks, and the exclusion by her high school 'friends', have left Muriel with a dwindling sense of self-worth. An unexpected encounter with Rhonda Epinstock, a former high school colleague now living a carefree life, sparks a glimmer of hope within Muriel. Seeing Rhonda's happiness outside the popular circle stirs within Muriel a yearning for a similar life. Throwing caution to the wind, Muriel resorts to theft to fund an exotic getaway, hoping to turn her life around. Together, Muriel and Rhonda embark on a journey to Sydney, leaving behind the critical eyes of Porpoise Spit. In Sydney, Muriel attempts to shrug off her past, even changing her name to Mariel. She believes that here, far from her father's criticism and her town's judgement, she can finally chase her dreams of happiness, the pinnacle of which is her dream wedding. Despite the lingering family issues and a sudden, serious problem with Rhonda, Muriel clings to what she perceives as her chance to realize her dreams. However, a resurfacing family crisis forces Muriel to reassess her priorities, leading her to a profound realization of what truly matters in life. In this heartwarming tale, Muriel's Wedding presents a journey of self-discovery, friendship, and the pursuit of happiness, wrapped in the vibrancy of ABBA's music.
