In the dimly lit corners of a nondescript bar in the rustic outskirts of Camarga, France, we find Jeff Farrell (Kerwin Matthews), an American painter and disillusioned wanderer nursing a heartbreak. His attention is soon captivated by the innocent allure of Annette (Liliane Brousse), the bar owner's stepdaughter, compelling him to extend his sojourn in the small town.
However, beneath the town's tranquil surface and Annette's innocent charm lurks an intricate web of secrets and seduction. Eve (Nadia Gray), Annette's enigmatic stepmother and the matron of the local bed and breakfast, weaves a seductive spell around Jeff, drawing him away from Annette into a thrilling labyrinth of intrigue.
The past comes knocking with a chilling tale of a horrific event known as the "Acetylene Murder". Four years prior, Annette was violated by a man named Janiello, leading to a gruesome retaliation by her father, Georges, who torched the offender to his death. This vicious act of retribution earned Georges a permanent residence in an asylum, being labeled a homicidal maniac.
Eve, discontented with her current life, hatches a daring plot with Jeff to liberate Georges from his confinement, promising him a future with her in exchange. The plan is for Georges to flee the country post-escape, but Jeff is oblivious to the true identity of the man they're aiding. It's not Georges they're setting free, but Henri, the asylum guard turned Eve's clandestine lover.
As Jeff delves deeper into the conspiracy, he is confronted by Inspector Etienne, leading him to unearth dark revelations that turn his world upside down. "Maniac" (1963) is a thrilling exploration of desire, deceit, and the lengths people will go to escape their past, leaving viewers on the edge of their seat, questioning every character's motives until the very end.
