Plot

Based on a true narrative, Lost Boundaries follows the compelling journey of Scott and Marsha Carter. After earning his medical degree, Scott, a light-skinned African American, weds Marsha and they relocate to Georgia. His dream of serving at the local black clinic shatters when he learns the position has been reserved for a local Southerner, and whispers suggest his complexion may have influenced the decision. Undeterred but disappointed, Scott retreats to Massachusetts, residing with his in-laws while he pursues employment. His efforts to secure a job as an African American yield no results. With the news of Marsha's pregnancy, Scott is compelled to accept a position at Portsmouth Hospital, reluctantly passing as a white man. His heroic act of saving Dr. Bracket's life there paves the way for a promising opportunity in Keenham, New Hampshire. Choosing to maintain his white identity, Scott embarks on a successful career in Keenham, where he and Marsha build a peaceful life for two decades with their son, Howard, and daughter, Shelley. This tranquility is disrupted when Scott and Howard decide to enlist in the military during World War II. Scott's application for officer status in the Navy unravels his carefully concealed black heritage, leading to his disqualification from receiving a commission. This revealing narrative draws us into an intimate exploration of identity, perseverance, and the intricate fabric of American society, leaving us questioning the true boundaries of race and belonging.
