Plot

Embark on a riveting journey through a year in the life of the legendary Joan Rivers; an actress at heart, with her comedic and writing endeavors serving as mere extensions of her thespian identity. At the age of 75, with a career spanning over four decades, Rivers navigates the tumultuous waves of her profession, the recent years having been less fruitful than she had hoped. Her yearning for a packed schedule brimming with engagements is driven not only by her extravagant lifestyle but also by her innate need to validate her worth in the face of personal insecurities, especially as she is now more recognized for her cosmetic surgeries than her professional achievements. Throughout this year, we see Rivers traversing from one performance to another - some grand, like the Kennedy Center Honors for George Carlin, a double act with Don Rickles in the heart of New York, and her own celebrity roast on Comedy Central, while others are seemingly modest. However, the most significant ones for her are her new play's premiere in Edinburgh, a tangible testament to her acting prowess, and her appearance on a celebrity edition of The Apprentice (2004), marking her triumphant return to NBC after a bitter disagreement with Johnny Carson led to her blacklisting in 1989. As Rivers navigates the ever-changing landscape of her career and personal life, she is accompanied by a dedicated entourage of long-time allies including her daughter Melissa Rivers, personal assistant 'Jocelyn Pickett', and manager Bill Sammeth. Yet, even amongst these pillars of support, Rivers finds that the journey is not without its share of bumps and hiccups. This documentary offers an intimate and compelling exploration of a year in the life of a woman who refuses to be anything but a 'Piece of Work.'
