In Secret (2013)

In the throes of the mid-nineteenth century, young Thérèse Raquin finds herself shackled by the confines of her life, dictated by her domineering paternal aunt, Madame Raquin. After the death of Thérèse's mother, she is sent to the French countryside to live under the stern eye of her aunt, who dotes on her only child, the sickly Camille Raquin. Camille, accustomed to privilege, views Thérèse as a guardian angel, a perspective fueled by Madame Raquin's controlling aspirations. Simultaneously, a series of events unfold: Camille secures a job as an office clerk in Paris; Thérèse learns of her father's tragic death off the Algerian coast; and using the modest pension left by Thérèse's father, the two women plan to move to Paris to join Camille, with intentions of opening a small lace shop. The final piece of Madame Raquin's plan falls into place as she orchestrates a marriage between Camille and Thérèse, despite the latter's lack of romantic affection for her cousin. Paris, however, offers a breath of liberation for Thérèse as she meets Laurent, Camille's childhood friend and co-worker. Despite his apparent vulgarity, Laurent stirs deep, hidden emotions within Thérèse, propelling them into a passionate, illicit affair. Their desire to be together overpowers their lives, compelling Thérèse to seek an escape from her loveless marriage. As Thérèse and Laurent inch closer to their dream of being together, they are confronted by the reality of their actions, which reverberate throughout the lives of those entangled in their web. As they grapple with this realization, they must question if their dream is truly what they desire, or if it's a mere illusion shrouded by their desperate need for escape. Set against the backdrop of 1860s Paris, 'In Secret' is a tale of repression, liberation, and the tragic consequences of forbidden love.
