In the heart of Hollisport, Louisiana, amidst the decay of a grand, crumbling plantation mansion, resides the aging and wealthy Charlotte Hollis, a self-imposed recluse since her father's death three and a half decades ago. The only souls to breach her solitude are her stony yet seemingly faithful housekeeper, Velma Crowther, and her longtime confidant, Dr. Drew Bayliss. Charlotte's life, however, is a haunting waltz with the past; a past marred by the brutal murder of her married lover, John Mayhew, during one of her father's legendary balls. John and Charlotte had planned to elope that fateful night, but instead, he was found bludgeoned to death, his head and right hand cruelly severed. Though no one was ever convicted, a chilling assumption hangs in the air: Charlotte, overcome by fury and despair when John decided against their escape, committed the heinous act herself.
