Innkeeper Thomas Nickerson is the last survivor of the whaling ship Essex, but he knows that loose lips sink ships. He reluctantly recounts his days aboard the ship, from his first voyage as a cabin boy to his epic struggle to survive. He tells of the crew's obsession with tracking down the largest whale they'd ever seen, an obsession that leads a shipwreck off the coast of South America and a desperate struggle to survive. Until now, no one has ever believed Nickerson, but his latest guest is an eager audience.
