Plot

Orphaned and alone, Failan (Cecilia Cheung) leaves her native land behind and emigrates to Korea, a foreign land filled with hope and the promise of family. Upon her arrival, she is met with the crushing reality that her relatives have long since relocated to Canada. With her dreams shattered, Failan finds herself in a desperate bid to create a life in this unfamiliar land. She navigates her way into an arranged marriage through a match-making agency, binding her fate with the aging Kang Jae (Choi Min Shik), a disrespected gangster, marred by a life of crime, who is as outdated as the world he inhabits. Struggling financially, Kang Jae accepts the proposition of the arranged marriage, unaware of the innocent dreams of his unseen wife. Failan, armed only with a picture of her distant husband, fills her days with dreams and wishes of the man she's married, yet never met. She pens countless letters, painting the canvas of her loneliness with words of longing for Kang Jae, but never musters the courage to send them, leaving her feelings unexpressed and her husband oblivious. As Kang Jae's life spirals further into darkness, he is coerced by his boss into taking the blame for a murder, with the promise of financial gain. Amidst this turmoil, he receives a letter from the unknown girl he married, setting in motion a chain of events that could alter his life forever. Embroiled in a world of crime, the only beacon of hope in Kang Jae's bleak existence is the unseen woman who, through her letters, unknowingly offers him a chance at redemption.
