Set in the raw landscape of 1865 Nevada, the film "Escort West" follows Ben Lassiter, a former Confederate Captain, and his spirited daughter Abbey as they journey through Modoc territory to Oregon. Their path intersects with a bustling way-station, Fenniman's Station, a key resting point for travelers. Here, a band of Union soldiers under Lieutenant Weeks' command is taking a respite from their duty of escorting an Army payroll and the Drury sisters to meet another patrol led by Captain Howard Poole.
Among the Drury sisters, Beth is engaged to Captain Poole, and Martha, embittered by the loss of her fiance during the Civil War, takes an immediate disliking to Ben Lassiter. She vehemently demands his arrest, but the Union patrol brushes off her hostility, reminding her the war has ended. Oblivious to the group, the Modocs have set a stealthy ambush nearby while another group has ensnared Captain Poole’s troop.
After a tense meal at the station, Lassiter and his daughter Abbey continue their voyage, setting up a night camp off the trail. As night descends, Lassiter stumbles upon a scene of inebriated Modoc Indians wielding liquor jugs identical to those at Fenniman's Station. With the unsettling realization that the station may have been attacked, Lassiter decides to warn Lieutenant Weeks' patrol at daybreak. In a twist of fate, this former Confederate officer finds himself in a race against time to save the lives of Union soldiers.
