Ride with the Devil (1999)

As the Civil War engulfs Missouri, best friends Jake Roedel and Jack Bull Chiles find their lives upturned. In a time where women and Blacks are marginalized, tragedy strikes when Union soldiers claim the life of Jack Bull's father, pushing the young men towards the Bushwhackers - a band of Southern loyalists. Among them, a Black man, Daniel Holt, indebted to the person who granted him his freedom. They engage in sporadic conflicts, retreating into hiding for prolonged periods. Their isolation is punctuated by the visits of Sue Lee, a young widow, who provides them with sustenance. An intimate bond blossoms between her and Jack Bull, but when he's critically injured, Jake must ensure her safety by guiding her to a secure farm in the south. The desire for revenge propels the Bushwhackers into a perilous raid on Kansas, led by men consumed by vengeance. At the tender age of nineteen, Jake grapples with the harsh realities of war. As he watches his comrades fall, he is faced with a profound question - where does true honor lie?
