Plot

In the bittersweet symphony of life, we meet Hong Yunsheng - affectionately dubbed "Little Brother." This young Chinese national has been cast in the light of societal failure, following a journey of hopes and dreams that took him from his homeland to the United States as a stowaway. In the hustle and bustle of the American dream, he found work as a dishwasher in a restaurant run by fellow Fujian provincials. His life took another turn when he fathered an illegitimate son, Fusheng, with Xuhui, the daughter of the restaurant owners, only to be deported back to China two years later. Back home, Little Brother's life is far from stable. His older brother, who cannot have children and runs a humble diner with his wife, is distant due to his perceived failures. Little Brother finds solace in the arms of his new girlfriend, Wu Ruifang, a touring opera performer who he barely knows. Despite Little Brother's cautionary tale, his friend Monkey attempts a similar voyage to the States, with fatal consequences from exposure to toxic chemicals onboard. As fate would have it, the restaurant family, with five-year-old Fusheng in tow, return to their Chinese hometown. Despite his longing to connect with his son, Little Brother is held at arm's length. The stage is set for a tug-of-war - a contest of wills between Little Brother and Xuhui's families, and a clash of traditional Chinese values against the backdrop of American legalities.
