Plot

In the year of 1844, nestled in the pastoral tranquility of Greenwich, Connecticut, the Wells family cultivates their humble farm under the stern guidance of their patriarch, Ephraim Wells. Amidst this simple existence, a tantalizing opportunity arises when Abigail Wells, Ephraim's wife, receives a letter from her affluent cousin, the enigmatic Nicholas "Nick" Van Ryn. He extends an invitation for one of their daughters to reside in his majestic Dragonwyck mansion, to serve as a companion for his young daughter, Katrine. The allure of adventure and the prospect of a life far removed from their pastoral existence captivates the naive and hopeful Miranda Wells. Coaxed by her mother and with her father's reluctant blessing, Miranda embarks on her journey to New York. Upon her arrival, she crosses paths with the imposing figure of her distant relative, Nick, who reigns over his tenant farmers in the Hudson Valley as a patroon. As she steps into the opulence of the Dragonwyck mansion, Miranda is introduced to Nick's insatiable wife Johanna, the innocent Katrine, and the housekeeper Magda. She also encounters Dr. Jeff Turner, a charismatic figure revered by the farmers labouring under Nick's rule. As she navigates through the political and social mazes of her new life, Miranda befriends Jeff and notices the negligence suffered by the young Katrine. Tragedy strikes when Johanna mysteriously falls ill and succumbs to her ailment, prompting Miranda's return to her family. However, the atheistic Nick seeks her out, proposing marriage and the promise of a life steeped in luxury and grandeur. As Miranda's dreams materialise, she marries Nick and returns to Dragonwyck, stepping into an existence fraught with dark secrets, whispered curses, and a husband who retreats into the solitude of his tower room. Will the allure of Dragonwyck transform into a happily ever after, or will it become a beautifully gilded cage?
