Devdas (2002)

Born into the opulence of Zamindar Narayan Mukherjee's lineage, Devdas (Shahrukh Khan) spent his formative years in the verdant village of Taj Sonapur. Here, he shared a unique, unspoken bond with his childhood confidante, Paro (Aishwarya), a bond that transcended societal norms and status. Their profound connection blossomed into a love that remained unvoiced, yet palpable. However, this idyllic world was shattered when Devdas was dispatched to London for further studies, leaving a heartbroken Paro clinging to the hope of his return, symbolized by a single, flickering diya. Years later, with the passage of time having only intensified his love, Devdas returns, besotted by Paro's radiant beauty. By the time Devdas sought to mend his mistake, it was too late; Paro, hurt and humiliated, had entered into a loveless marriage with the wealthy, older Zamindar Bhuvan, leaving Devdas shattered. Seeking solace in the depths of alcoholism, he found an unlikely companion in the enchanting courtesan, Chandramukhi (Madhuri Dixit), who was instantly smitten by him. Their bond deepened as Chandramukhi became a confidante for Devdas, a witness to his undying love for Paro. Meanwhile, Paro, despite her opulent surroundings, remained trapped in the memory of Devdas, his absence a constant ache in her heart. Devdas, paradoxically, found himself the object of intense love from two women - Chandramukhi, whom he could never love, and Paro, whom he could never cease loving. This tale of unfulfilled love and societal constraints is the poignant saga of Devdas, a man caught in the throes of a love he could neither relinquish nor reciprocate.
