Plot

In the misty corners of rural Ireland, seasoned psychiatrist Jane Morton is tasked with the perplexing case of Dorothy Mills, a disturbed teenager accused of attempting to strangle an infant she was babysitting. Jane, still reeling from the tragic loss of her husband and son in a heartbreaking accident, ventures to the isolated island where Dorothy resides. Upon arrival, her journey takes a jolting turn as her car is forced off the road by a reckless trio in an orange vehicle, leaving her vehicle submerged in the sea. Jane narrowly escapes death, emerging from the wreckage to find herself in a village shrouded in eerie mysteries and a community gripped by unsettling tension. As she delves into Dorothy's psyche within the confines of her Aunt Eileen MacMahon's home, Jane uncovers a tangled web of identities within the troubled girl. Dorothy, it seems, is not just Dorothy, but also Mary, Kurt, and Duncan - three teenagers, and Mimi, a three-year-old girl, all cohabiting in the same body. But when Dorothy channels David, Jane's deceased son, the psychiatrist is plunged into a maelstrom of grief and confusion. Jane's investigation unfolds against a backdrop of a fervently religious village populace and the haunting specter of a looming, malevolent presence. The locals are fervently bound to their faith, their beliefs deepening the shadows that engulf the island. As Jane grapples with her personal loss and the enigma that is Dorothy Mills, she uncovers a chilling reality - something dark and sinister dwells within the island, intertwining the fates of its inhabitants, young and old.
