Chronically Metropolitan paints an intriguing narrative of Fenton Dillane, a young author and son of renowned novelist turned English professor, Christopher Dillane. Abruptly departing the familial New York nest for San Francisco after his premier short story, "The Birthday Party," is published in the New Yorker, Fenton leaves a trail of strained relationships in his wake. The story, though fictional, is a not-so-subtle reflection of his social circle, intensifying the collapse of his then-girlfriend Jessie's parents' marriage, and leaving the aspiring photographer in emotional turmoil. One year later, Fenton is drawn back to the city that never sleeps, lured by a scandalous incident involving his father, which shatters Christopher's polished public persona and hospitalizes him. Fenton's homecoming reveals a family in disarray; his parents' marriage is now a façade, with his mother Annabel seeking solace in therapy and a new relationship.
