Plot

Choking Man is a powerful concoction of mental conflict and mystic realism that profoundly portrays the immigrant's journey in present-day America. The story centers around Jorge, a painfully introverted Ecuadorian dishwasher laboring in a rundown diner, nestled in the heart of Jamaica, Queens, New York, under the supervision of Rick. In the diner's kitchen, his world is overshadowed by the ever-looming Heimlich Maneuver instruction poster. From his secluded kitchen niche, Jorge wordlessly yearns for a connection with Amy, the recently recruited Chinese waitress. Despite her attempts to bridge the chasm between them, the divide may simply be too vast. At work, he is persistently harassed by his coworker Jerry, while at his Harlem boarding house, he grapples with his inner turmoil, under the oppressive influence of his commanding 'roommate.' Set amidst the backdrop of JFK airport, a melting pot of cultures, Choking Man encapsulates the suffocating sensation and near-literal strangulation that newcomers in America endure as they strive to carve out their space and meaning in this foreign land.
