Plot

In the emotional aftermath of General Custer's bloody defeat at Little Big Horn, the film "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" sweeps across the vast landscapes of the American West, weaving together the compelling narratives of three distinct characters. Embarking on a journey from the gold-laden Black Hills of the Dakotas to the political battlegrounds of Washington, D.C., the movie explores the devastating impacts of the U.S. government's relentless policies designed to strip the Sioux Indians of their identity, dignity, and sacred lands. Charles Eastman, a young Sioux doctor who has emerged from the crucible of Dartmouth's education, stands as a living testimony to the alleged triumph of assimilation. Together with Elaine Goodale, a patrician schoolteacher, he attempts to improve conditions for the Indians on the reservation, fostering hope amidst despair. In contrast, Sitting Bull, the unyielding Lakota Chief, stands firm against the mounting governmental pressures, preserving the essence of his people's culture and traditions. Back in Washington, Senator Henry Dawes, an architect of the government's Indian affairs policy, fervently lobbies for a more humane approach to the situation. He combats the aggressive stance of General William Tecumseh Sherman, advocating for Native American rights against a backdrop of political tension. However, their efforts are overshadowed by the rise of the Ghost Dance - a prophetic movement led by Wovoka that promises an end to the Indians' suffering under the white man's rule. The story takes a tragic turn with the assassination of Sitting Bull and the horrifying massacre of hundreds of Indian men, women, and children by the 7th Cavalry at Wounded Knee Creek on December 29, 1890. The film captures the heartbreak and resilience of a people, creating a stirring narrative that reverberates with historical significance. "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" is a poignant exploration of a tumultuous time in American history, painting a vivid portrait of the struggle for survival, identity, and dignity.
