Plot

In the heart of America's industrial landscape, Frank Taylor, an unassuming but ambitious machinist, dreams of ascending the ranks to become a foreman. His aspirations are thwarted when the coveted position is awarded to Joe Dombrowski, a diligent Polish-American immigrant who prefers the company of technical manuals to his fellow workers. Embittered by this perceived injustice, Frank succumbs to the influence of a conniving coworker and unwittingly finds himself entangled in the malevolent web of the Black Legion, a clandestine hate group bearing a chilling resemblance to the Ku Klux Klan. As Frank dons the black hood of the Legion, he becomes a puppet of xenophobic paranoia, participating in acts of intimidation against foreign-born Americans. His first victim, Dombrowski, is driven out of town when the Legion sets his chicken farm ablaze, inadvertently creating a vacancy for the foreman’s position. However, his involvement with the Legion begins to consume him, overshadowing his work at the factory and seeping into his personal life, threatening his job and fracturing his marriage. The story takes a darker turn when Frank, consumed by guilt, reveals his secret to his best friend, Ed Jackson, setting in motion a series of perilous events. As the Legion's sinister influence continues to pervade every facet of his life, Frank is propelled towards a harrowing tragedy. In this chilling 1937 drama, loyalty, ambition, and manipulation collide in a potent exploration of the dangerous allure of hate groups and the devastating consequences of prejudice.
