Plot

In the heart of Paris, under the wise rule of King Louis XI, the stern Chief Justice Frollo's gaze falls upon the enchanting gypsy girl, Esmeralda, in the luminous cathedral of Notre Dame during the revelry of Fool's Day. Compelled by an insidious desire, he orders the hunchbacked bellringer, Quasimodo, to seize her, only to have his scheme foiled by the gallant Captain of the Guards, Phoebus, who liberates the damsel. The city courts harshly punish Quasimodo with public flogging, leaving him parched and helpless under the unforgiving sun. It's Esmeralda, the very girl he was manipulated into abducting, who shows him the only act of kindness, quenching his thirst with water. As fate would have it, Esmeralda finds herself entangled again with both Frollo, whose obsession with her continues to darken, and Phoebus, at a grandeur-filled gathering of nobles. The night ends in tragedy with Phoebus murdered, and Esmeralda wrongfully accused and sentenced to death for the heinous crime. With the gallows ominously looming, Esmeralda's only hope lies in the desperate attempts of Clopin, the audacious King of the Beggars; Gringoire, her humble husband; and Quasimodo, the misunderstood bellringer, as they each employ their own unique methods to rescue her from the jaws of death.
