Plot

In a tribute to his own immigrant roots, director Louis Malle embarks on an intimate exploration of the diverse tapestry of immigrant experiences across 1980s America in "And the Pursuit of Happiness". Weaving together a spectrum of narratives, the film plunges into conversations with Mexican border crossers - both legal and illegal - and draws upon the ingenuity of an Indian motel proprietor. Malle's lens captures the diligent spirit of African and Asian urban families before launching into a comprehensive discourse with the pioneering Costa Rican astronaut. The vibrant Cuban exile community in Miami comes alive in the narrative, punctuated by enriching dialogues with celebrated West Indian poet Derek Walcott. The film brushes upon the life of the exiled Nicaraguan General Samoza and his extended family, offering a unique perspective on political and personal displacement. Concluding with a poignant visit to the Russian Jewish community in Brooklyn, NY, this cinematic journey ties in beautifully with the centenary celebration of the Statue of Liberty, underlining the enduring promise of the American Dream.
