Plot

In the heart of the 1890s, under the oppressive rule where Greek and Armenian minorities were repressed, a young, naive yet kind-hearted man named Stavros Topouzoglou resides. Born a Turkish by ethnicity, yet Greek at heart, Stavros is an embodiment of Elia Kazan's uncle's struggles, a tale of dreams and resilience. The societal scorn he faces for befriending an Armenian only fuels his dream of a better life; a life in the far-off land of the free – America. With the scarce fortune of his parents, Stavros embarks on a life-altering voyage to Constantinople, tasked with aiding the family-owned carpet shop. His journey, undertaken on foot with nothing but a small donkey as a companion, forces him to question his existence in Anatolia. As he navigates the complexities of life, every hardship endured and the loss of his family's funds only intensifies his resolve to reach the shores of America. Upon arrival in Constantinople, Stavros is gripped by an unwavering determination to raise the 110 Turkish pounds required for the third-class fare to the United States. Despite repeated failures and the threat of losing everything, he defiantly clings onto his dream. Rejecting any offers of work, wealth, or wedlock that doesn't involve his journey to America, Stavros risks all, even his own life, to keep his dream alive. As he teeters on the brink of achieving his goal, it appears to be cruelly snatched away, leaving him on the precipice of despair. However, a past act of kindness might just pave the way for him to finally realize his ultimate dream – to reach the promised land of America, where he hopes to create a life worthy of making his parents proud.
