Plot

In the tumultuous year of 1916, impassioned Father Eoin O'Donnell firmly believes that only violence will expel Britain from Ireland. He becomes a formidable influence on the young, impressionable Antaine, urging him to engage in the bloody Easter Rising. Fast-forward fifty years, Antaine reappears in Derry as a seasoned gunman, stirring up painful memories that had driven Eoin to his breaking point in 1916. This reunion re-ignites Eoin's guilt, reflecting on how his influence on Antaine in his youth has now morphed into Antaine's sinister sway over his congregation, particularly the innocent altar boy, Feidhlim. Once a fiery advocate for violence, Eoin has evolved into a man of peace, striving to persuade Antaine to negotiate rather than fight. However, as his attempts prove futile, Eoin acknowledges the grim reality: the only way to shatter the vicious cycle of violence and revenge is to dismantle Feidhlim's adoration of Antaine as a hero. This task demands a heavy sacrifice from Eoin - the act of betraying Antaine. Struggling with the moral weight of his decision, Eoin performs his Mass, which could very well be his last rites. Just as Feidhlim steps into the church, history spirals back to its origin, completing a painful, full circle of influence and violence, remorse and redemption. The tale weaves a poignant narrative about the cyclical nature of conflict and the heart-rending cost of peace.
