Plot

In the tranquil north of England, an obscured masterpiece lies beneath the pristine white paint of a quaint country church, its existence concealed for half a millennium. The task of unveiling this hidden gem falls to Tom Birken, a World War I veteran haunted by his past, who seeks solace in spending a month in the country to restore the mural. Concurrently, James Moon, another veteran bearing the weight of war, embarks on a quest to discover the grave of an ancestral Crusader related to the church's benefactor. The Reverend Mr. Keach warns that the mural could serve as a distraction, but it soon becomes an enchanting mystery that draws the curious attention of Alice, the rector's wife. She finds herself drawn to the bell tower abode of Birken, making her presence felt with a basket of apples. Yet, a more profound offering is the yellow rose she once gave him, now delicately pressed within the pages of a book. Will she dare to open it? This tale, set in quiet corners and under the shadow of a war-torn past, paints an enthralling picture of hope, redemption, and the power of art to heal the deepest scars. The question lingers: will these characters find what they seek in their month in the country?
