Rose of Versailles (1979)

Born into the world as Oscar François de Jarjayes, she was groomed to be a man by her father, a prominent French general, and ascended to the esteemed role of commander of the royal guard, protecting the opulent French Royal Family. Adorned with honor and beauty, she carves her own niche among the glittering aristocracy of Versailles. Yet, beneath the grandeur of the palace, the era of the French Revolution brews, a time of stark contrast where the lower class languishes in abject poverty while the nobility revels in unapologetic luxury. The harsh irony of this era isn't lost on Oscar. Torn between her obligation to the monarchy and her inherent compassion, she finds herself sympathizing with the impoverished masses. She is a spectator to the tumultuous historical event that is the French Revolution, a rebellion where the downtrodden peasantry dared to rise against the privileged nobility.
