Plot

In the bustling heart of Bombay, the widowed Mrs. Desai shares her humble abode with her musical prodigy son, Ajay, his expectant wife Sonia, and her younger son Anand, who is deeply woven into the fabric of a right-wing organization led by the influential Subodh Malgaonkar. Their harmonious existence is shattered when militants, fuelled by religious animosity, decimate the Babri Masjid in Uttar Pradesh, igniting a spark of fury throughout the Muslim community that engulfs even remote Bombay in its fiery wrath. As riots surge and the city is shrouded in foreboding, the police impose a curfew, turning once lively neighbourhoods into silent battlegrounds. Amid this chaos, Mrs. Desai, driven by faith, ventures to her cherished place of worship, only to fall victim to a savage attack by militants. With more than 80% burns, she is confined to the sterile confines of Holy Family Hospital, teetering on the brink of life and death. In the wake of this tragedy, Ajay finds himself in turmoil, grappling with Sonia's desire to escape to England, seeking a future unbound by religious and caste constraints for their unborn child. Simultaneously, he struggles to quell Anand's growing thirst for revenge against innocent Muslims. Yet, Ajay's paramount challenge is to honour his mother's dying wish - a burial befitting her faith, a tradition respected by Christians and Muslims alike. Caught between the relentless pressure from Subodh Malgaonkar advocating for a traditional Hindu cremation and the solemn promise to his dying mother, Ajay bears the weight of this secret. He must navigate this maze of conflicting loyalties and rising tensions, ensuring his mother's final wish is fulfilled, even as the world around him threatens to crumble.
