Plot

In the throes of 1975, amidst the Cultural Revolution's fervor in China, a blossoming young girl named Xiu Xiu is exiled to an isolated fragment of the Sichuan steppes. This deliberate displacement, a common fate for the youth of the era, marks the beginning of her gritty tale. As the narrative unfolds, Xiu Xiu is dispatched further into the wilderness, compelled to accompany a Tibetan vagabond, Lao Jin, on a quest to master the art of horse herding. In the heart of this desolate landscape, Xiu Xiu experiences the bitter sting of first love, enraptured by a man who vows to use his influence to expedite her return home. This poignant encounter, marked by the gift of a treasured apple and the loss of her innocence, sets in motion a domino effect of tragic events. As she yearns for his return, a stream of men exploit her vulnerability, reducing her to a mere object of desire. The plot thickens as Xiu Xiu, now with child, is escorted by a protective Lao Jin to civilization for an abortion. However, the supposed safety of civilization only exposes her to further predation by opportunistic guards. Despite Lao Jin's desperate attempts to shield her, Xiu Xiu's plight serves as a haunting testament to innocence lost amidst societal upheaval. The story of Xiu Xiu is a stark exploration of human resilience and the poignant struggles one faces in the face of adversity.
