Plot

In the year 1732, the self-righteous and earnestly pious Oxford instructor, John Wesley, embarks on a life-altering journey of faith and redemption. Presented with an opportunity to travel to the nascent colony of Georgia, Wesley envisages it as a perfect platform to spread his religious beliefs among the indigenous tribes. His voyage, however, is marred by a terrifying storm that leaves him questioning the very foundation of his faith. Once in Georgia, Wesley's grand plans hit a snag. His preaching ambitions among the natives are thwarted and instead, he finds himself ensnared in a complicated web of love with Sophy Hopkey, the enchanting niece of the local magistrate. As the romance fails to culminate in a marriage proposal, a bitter feud brews between Wesley and Sophy, ultimately leading to a public scandal and Wesley's arrest on charges of character defamation. His trial, led by none other than Sophy's uncle, is a foregone conclusion, forcing Wesley to flee back to England, his spirit marred by failure and disgrace. In London, Wesley encounters the Moravian missionary Peter Boehler, whose guidance helps him grapple with his perceived failures and deep-seated fears. This interaction sparks a profound transformation within Wesley, kindling a renewed sense of faith: "I felt my heart strangely warmed." Emboldened, Wesley begins to preach about his spiritual awakening, but finds the doors of London's churches shut to him. Unperturbed, he takes his message to the fields, finding a receptive audience among England's downtrodden and neglected. Alongside his brother Charles, Wesley embarks on revolutionary social ministries, stirring controversy as he aims to improve the plight of the impoverished while instilling in them a sense of faith and spiritual transformation. Despite the violent opposition and attempts to disrupt their meetings, Wesley and his followers, the "Methodies," persevere, establishing social initiatives that leave an indelible mark on England. Today, nearly 75 million people around the globe trace their spiritual lineage back to John Wesley, a testament to his enduring legacy.
