We Are The Tide (2016)

Fifteen years ago, the sleepy coastal town of Windholm woke up to an eerie emptiness; their ocean had vanished overnight. The inexplicable phenomenon stirred a wave of unanswered questions and fear among the inhabitants, leaving a haunting void that stretched beyond the barren coastline. Among those entranced by the mystery is Micha (28), a young physicist determined to unravel the puzzle. Despite his relentless efforts, he is constantly thwarted by the archaic establishment, resulting in the denial of a coveted university scholarship for his research. Amidst the disappointment, Jana (31) reappears at the university. Once Micha's colleague and the daughter of the institute's director, her abrupt departure a year ago to Portugal left Micha grappling with personal and professional losses. Now returned to officially renounce her scientific pursuits, she also seeks to resolve unresolved matters with Micha. Against all odds, and sans official approval, Micha embarks on a journey to Windholm to test his theory. Unanticipatedly, Jana accompanies him, and together they step into a village still trapped in its traumatic past. The day their ocean vanished, the village lost all its children, their fate as unknown as the ocean's disappearance, their bodies never recovered. In Windholm, Micha's devotion to science and logic begins to waver as the village's mystery engulfs him. He encounters Hanna (19), the last child of Windholm, who balances her belief in the children's survival with her efforts to rebuild life in the desolate town. As Jana contemplates the uncanny circumstances that brought them back to this strange place, she and Micha must confront their own pasts and losses. Amidst desolate houses and deserted playgrounds, a tiny footprint on the emptied ocean floor, and a forsaken room that once belonged to a starry-eyed boy dreaming of the stars, Micha and Jana are compelled to grapple with their personal ghosts, the enigma of Windholm, and the haunting question - where did the children go?
