Plot

When Eli Zeal, a hardened Jewish shopkeeper, falls victim to a botched robbery attempt by an 11-year-old boy in the heart of Washington, DC, his world is flipped upside down. The boy's desperate single mother, Tyree Battle, in an act of despair, abducts the wounded Zeal. With her son in tow, she flees to the forgotten corners of her past in the quaint town of Waterproof, Louisiana - a place and a family she hasn't faced in years. Suddenly, Zeal is thrust into the unfamiliar heart of the deep south, submerged in a world defined by Tyree's complex family - a brother grappling with a debilitating brain injury, another consumed by anger and alcohol, a wise hundred-year-old grandfather, and a mother whose faith is as unyielding as it is inspiring. As they endeavor to restore Zeal's health, he becomes an unwilling witness to the family's battle with their own demons. However, as Zeal begins to mend, the family's past doesn't stay hidden for long. Ancient shadows rise, forcing them to face a haunting secret that has long since fractured their bonds. This story is a compelling exploration of redemption, faith, and the strength of familial ties when confronted with the darkest corners of their past.
