Plot

In 1962, Lawrence, a Yale graduate and notorious womanizer, finds himself ensnared in a web of gambling debts. When his affluent father refuses to bail him out, Lawrence hatches an impulsive plan to escape his furious creditors. He masks his identity and fills in for his roommate on a Peace Corps flight jetting off towards the Golden Triangle of Southeast Asia. Landing in a world far removed from his privileged upbringing, Lawrence is partnered with the wholesome WSU graduate Tom Tuttle and the pragmatic beauty, Beth Wexler. Their mission: to construct a bridge that promises to transform the lives of the local villagers. Unbeknownst to them, this simple wooden bridge holds the attention of the U.S. Army, a formidable local Communist faction, and a ruthless drug lord - all coveting it for their own reasons. As they navigate through the unfamiliar terrain, the trio relies on the help of At Toon, the sole English-speaking native. Amidst the turmoil, they must unravel the complex web of interests surrounding the bridge, and determine the best course of action for the villagers and themselves. In this comedy of errors and clash of cultures, Lawrence's two-year stint in the Peace Corps tests his mettle like never before. Can he survive, or will he crumble under the pressure of his newfound responsibilities? "Volunteers" is a comedic adventure that takes you on a wild ride through the underbelly of Southeast Asia, where privilege meets poverty, and where intentions, no matter how good, are put to the ultimate test.
