Plot

Major Lincoln Bond, a decorated USAF officer, is left scarred by his experiences as a prisoner of war in Korea, facing not just physical torment but psychological torture as well. Upon his release, he returns to the heartland of America, where he is reassigned as a test pilot at the prestigious Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base. His mission: to fly and evaluate the Gilbert XF-120 fighter, a cutting-edge aircraft that symbolizes the future of the Air Force. The fate of this revolutionary aircraft, and indeed the future direction of the Air Force, hinges on a series of critical tests aimed at proving the plane's reliability and safety. Major Bond, however, finds himself in a maelstrom of danger when he uncovers a potentially catastrophic structural defect during a test flight. This unexpected revelation threatens not only the acceptance of the aircraft but also puts the entire project on a knife-edge. As the tension mounts, Major Bond's past begins to cast a long shadow over the present. His commanding officer and colleagues start doubting his mental stability, suspecting that the traumas of his POW experience might be clouding his judgment. Major Bond finds himself in a battle not just against a potential mechanical failure, but also against the ghosts of his past and the skepticism of his peers.
